Wedding stationery timeline: save the dates to on-the-day signs

Every piece of wedding stationery, in order, with when to send it — from the first save-the-date to the bar menu on the night.

Wedding stationery arrives in two waves: the pieces guests receive at home, and the pieces they see on the day. Both run on deadlines, and the on-the-day pieces can't be finished until your RSVPs are in. Here's the timeline we work to at Lunar Studio.

8–12 months before: save the dates

Send as soon as the date and venue are confirmed. They don't need full details — just names, date and location — but they set the visual tone for everything that follows.

3–4 months before: invitations

Order invitations about four months out and post them three months before the day, with an RSVP deadline six to eight weeks ahead. Include dietary requirements on the RSVP to save chasing later.

4–6 weeks before: the on-the-day pieces

Once RSVPs are in you can finish the table plan, place cards and menus.

Add the signs guests actually use: welcome sign, order of the day, and a bar menu showing your signature cocktails. If you're booking cocktail bar hire, we can design the menu board to match.

One designer, one look

The easiest way to keep everything consistent is to use one designer from save-the-dates to the bar board. Lunar Studio covers the whole run, and pairs with photography and video if you want the day captured in the same style.

For the order of the day itself, see our wedding day timeline.
